How To Choose Rock Wool Insulation Material

By Alex D White

Having a poorly insulated building could have many energy disadvantages. It makes it an uncomfortable place to work and live in if conditioned air escapes. In addition, you will have to incur an added cost of cooling it on summers and heating it during winter. Many Rockwool insulation options exist in the market that can fit any structure, climate or space type.

Cellulose insulation is produced mainly from recycled paper. It is made from the waste materials and energy that is produced in the manufacture of mineral wool insulation and fiberglass. You can reuse scrap cellulose produced as a byproduct during installation to reduce waste. Cellulose insulation does not have any significant impact on the air quality in the building. It is blown into ceiling, wall cavities and attic surfaces.

The floors above the ground may offer more opportunities to reduce loss of energy with the right insulation. Narrow down your options by considering cost, way of insulation, and degree of disruptions to normal activities your facility can bear. Rigid insulations require attaching the insulation either to the exterior or the wall, while flexible materials only need a hole in the wall to spray into the space or the wall of a vacant room such as the attic.

Fiberglass on the other hand, is made of recycled glass and silica sand, which are abundant resources. Its manufacture requires assembling the materials to melt in a fossil fuel, which uses a lot of energy and produces a significant amount of air pollution as compared to other types of insulation. It is hard to inhale the fibers if you install them properly, which can irritate the skin, eye and throat.

You can easily insulate many types of envelopes from the outside, and minimize disruptions for the occupants. You might want to use a rigid insulation for exterior applications to avoid interfering on the internal space of the occupants residing in the building. If you find it too hot or cold and getting the right temperature becomes hard, maybe the HVAC and insulation systems are inadequate.

It can be an expensive scheme to renovate and repair the roof. Unless your roof is about to crumble down, you might want to save the project for a later date, and focus first on the rest of the building. If it needs renovation, you could use some common choices such as oriented strand board, rigid planks of foam board, Rockwool blankets and spray foams.

Two types of polystyrene exist; expanded and extruded, otherwise known as beadboard, and blueboard respectively. There is no minimum content for recycling polystyrene, but its products may have some recycled content due to the recycling of the polystyrene itself. There are brominated flame retardants in polystyrene that raise serious environmental and health concerns because some of the compounds are bioaccumulative.

Even for old buildings, you can find an insulating tactic that will guarantee all the needs of the building without excessive costs. Many aging buildings require retrofitting in order to save energy, but many owners do not appreciate the value for this. Just because your building is old does not mean that it has to be torn down.
